This is all hypothetical and the M5 is there because I just like that shade of blue. Honest.

Kinja'd!!!

... It wears white rather well, wait what. Anyway so that age of question how much should I spend on a car has appeared again and despite being age old, no one has an answer yet but let's keep asking anyway.

Kinja'd!!!

... Imola Red, I wonder if I could drive to Imola in less than 24 Hours, huh oh yeah. So let's say I have £5,000 in savings and my take home salary after the many taxes I will have to pay is £18,500. I live at home with my father and my means of commute are a pair of trainers. What is the maximum I should spend on a car in your opinion?

Can you afford paying 5k per year? If yes buy the car you love. If not, get something else :)

If I decide to eat exclusively from the Tesco value range maybe but that depends fully on my stomach lasting to the next year.

You'll spend that in brakes alone on an M5 (heavy car).

$50,000 a year.

My response was based on you paying for the car in three years though, if you could see yourself paying for it in five years it's still a go. Tesco ain't all that bad though is it?

Nah it great but it ain't good for me. I just finished Uni and I feel like shit from all the crap I've been eating. Three years to an M5 is not bad.

I might as well buy another M5 then since they are going for £6,000. Either way I'm not getting one soon (Sheds tears).

:) So we're back on the "could he afford it" then, seems to me you can. I'd rather get an E36 M3 if I'm honest, but that's just me :P

Lots of factors here - do you include fuel? Would you own the car outright? Wonder what the cost of ownership would be for this M5 .... I guess, given the numbers you don't want to spend more than £2000 a year to keep something on the road.

They are virtually non existent in the UK. Pretty much the cheapest M car is the E39 M5 at £6,500 (No I don't count crashed E46 SMG Convertibles).

Include everything. I should probably of cut back on the M5 jokes. The thing is I don't need a car but I do want one but I have no idea what would be appropriate amount to spend. I am at the point in young person's life where they need to start planning how to use money effectively and being a petrolhead I'm liable to just dump money into car when I shouldn't. I see that I could potentially have £20,000 in savings in 12 months and the mind goes racing through the classifieds.

I'm 21 so nobody on earth will insure me for that thing. As for image I live in very chavy part of London so it'll fit in great.

Ahh.. sorry, did not think about that, we don't really care about age here in Norway.

Where in London do you live mate? Not Bethnal Green I'd guess.. And you don't strike me as an Essex boy either. :)

I bought an old Volvo a long time ago - never planned for any repairs. Bad move. I'd say the following - get the cheapest thing you will enjoy. Then, the Car Guys advice - before you buy, take the car to your mechanic (or one that is recommended) and tell them to go through the car as if their 16 year old child is going to be driving it. Get a list of what's wrong, the cost to fix everything, and you can use it as a negotiating tool. And that way, if you're going to be laying out money for brakes, or a transmission, you can plan ahead.

Well if I'm going cheap I might as well close my eyes and think of England.

Kinja'd!!!

I bet you have no idea what this is.

Man, I wish the insurance on the ATR wasn't kinda nutty; I really like the look of them.

Have you considered a 130i M Sport ? Pricey to buy, but the maintenance shouldn't be too bad for a BMW, and if you'll be buying in about three years, they'll have depreciated a decent bit more.

Oh, and then there's the insurance: I managed to find a TPF&F quote on one for only a few hundred more than my 106, which is just crazy. It might be worth running a plate through Confused, or something, just to check.

Nah, not a fan of that shape of 1 series. Picking cars purely for my own enjoyment is a lot harder than I thought. I really need to sit down and make a spreadsheet of all the cars I could get within the next year.
